International Coastal Clean-up: A UWI Clean-up at Caura River, Trinidad

          I am a first year student at UWI St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago and I am studying Environmental Science and Sustainable Technology. There is an organization called the First Year Experience (FYE) and they were planning a river clean up at Caura river for the International Coastal Clean-Up 2018 (FYE 2018). Indeed, I was glad to be part of it. On Saturday 15th September, 2018, The UWI FYE with the group of students interested went to Caura river to participate in cleaning up the area. When we reached there, we met up with other groups and were separated into four persons per group. Within a group of four, three persons picked up cans/plastic, general waste, and glass while one person did the tallying of the litter. My group were three members of an organization called M.A.D.E TNT (Making a Difference Everywhere in Trinidad and Tobago) and with our teamwork, we were able to compile 26 kilograms of waste. During the exercise, we were amazed at the amount of garbage around Caura river and although we had on gloves it was sometimes hard to pick it up. However, with our spirit not to give up and the positive support of each other and everyone else we did it. Furthermore, the ICC was an event that started about 30 years about and today it shows that there is strength in numbers and we can keep our oceans safe from the danger of plastics, Styrofoam and pollution on a whole. When we last met my beloved country of Trinidad and Tobago was faced with excessive flooding   and I indicated that Styrofoam and Plastic Pollution was a significant cause. Now, what happens after? According to TU Delft Repositories, one type of flooding is rainfall flood (Peterson, 2001). This confirms what Trinidad and Tobago faced. Also, the consequences of floods affect the economy, society, and the environment. In this aftermath, it is amazing to know how much effort is put to stand up after being hit down, especially a whole nation.
