Is it the end, or just the beginning?

Is It The End, Or Just The Beginning? https://www.behance.net/gallery/16363751/Plastic-Pollution-Awareness-Campaign           For the past 10 weeks, I hope I made a positive impact in your lives in terms of plastic and Styrofoam pollution. We started from the beginning, but we are still living so we have to be thankful. This course, Science Communication in the Environmental Science and Sustainable Technology degree at UWI has made this journey possible and I thank my teachers very much. Indeed, I feel like I am leaving everyone, but something in my mind makes me want to continue and just like a favorite T.V. show, maybe a next season can be possible. As the quote states, "Action speaks louder than words", we need to recycle or even eliminate the use of plastic and Styrofoam. I am not saying to live on a mountain, I just want you to make at least one change, it might be a reusable bottle or a biodegradable container, won't you like a ...

Anti-Styroplastical Vision

Image
Anti-Styroplastical Vision Queen's Royal College Environmental Club           Let's go back in time and rediscover my passion for the environment. I start with this because in life it is important to remember one's roots, it is the foundation for our achievements. So back in 2013, when I was a form 3 student at Queen's Royal College, Trinidad and Tobago; my Geography teacher, Mr. Peru instilled in my mind a consciousness of the environment. This was the key point in this positive change, that is the formation of the very own Queen's Royal College Environmental Club.           With this milestone, I became the president and throughout my life in this college, as a group we accomplished many things such as recycling and beautification. In particular, the recycling was a little tough with it being compared to garbage, but it became popular when points was given towards the sports day event. Entirely, it was an ...

Styrofoam: The Infinite form of waste or is it?

Styrofoam: The Infinite Form Of Waste Or Is It? http://www.ipsnews.net/2013/08/despite-two-bans-styrofoa m-trash-still-plagues-haiti/           We use Styrofoam in our everyday lives. It may be a coffee one may be drinking to plates of food at a family gathering to prevent from washing dishes. No matter what, we have crossed paths with it in one way or the other. Indeed, it may seem great to keep something hot or provide many people with food, but what really happens after it is used? Most likely it ends up in the trash and further into landfills which according to Joe McCarthy, takes up around 30% of global landfill space. Infact, in his article, McCarthy talked about Styrofoam taking 500 years to decompose and a group of teens coming up with an innovative idea to recycle Styrofoam. 1           Due to the response of the amount of plastic pollution found at a trip to Central America, Lu...

Rethink Plastic?

Rethink Plastic? https://twitter.com/tjy511/status/953395126344323073    Hey Everyone! I am happy to be here again to discuss what is happening to our beautiful home, because nothing is perfect and awareness is important. Indeed, I hope you guys are doing well and making better choices, no pressure.  https://theplastic-project.com/2016/08/01/the-economy-of-recycling-plastic/    I am sure everyone know the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) and this is great to know we are helping to make a positive change. However, according to Sirena Bergman, there is an error in recycling and I  want to suggest we use a 4 th R called ‘Rethink’. In her article, the carry-home message is, “recycling is an easy cop-out for governments and large corporations, but the truth is that we have to take very different action if we want to stop irreversibly poisoning the planet.” 1      When I think about it, business is business and if there is a barrie...

The Dream after a Nightmare

Image
The Dream After A Nightmare                     Hey everyone. When we last met my beloved country of Trinidad and Tobago was faced with excessive flooding   and I indicated that Styrofoam and Plastic Pollution was a significant cause. Now, what happens after? According to TU Delft Repositories, one type of flooding is rainfall flood (Peterson, 2001). This confirms what Trinidad and Tobago faced. Also, the consequences of floods affect the economy, society, and the environment. In this aftermath, it is amazing to know how much effort is put to stand up after being hit down, especially a whole nation. For example, the ODPM (Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management) have been involved in clean up exercises at affected areas and assessing damages. In terms of pollution, according to the World Health Organization, there are many health risks if solid waste such as plastic and Styrofoam is not managed properly. In light of this,...

Styrofoam and Plastic: The Cause Of Floods?

Image
Styrofoam and Plastic: The Cause Of Floods? Hello, I return again to bring awareness of Plastic and Styrofoam pollution. When we last met, we witnessed the beginning of these mistaken inventions. Now in 2018, we are significantly affected, looking for solutions and fighting a 'never ending' battle. In Trinidad and Tobago, my beloved home, have recently faced by flooding from the rains brought about by the ITCZ ( Inter-tropical Convergence Zone). Infact, according to the local news station, CNC3, the central part of Trinidad was affected, where people said that the floods were nothing compared since 20 years ago. This was heartbreaking, but you're probably thinking what does this have to do with pollution? In an article from the Jamaica Gleaner, "plastic bottles and Styrofoam cause flooding by blocking drains along Shoemaker Gully"(Figure 2) 1 . Also, I was looking at my Facebook feed and a particular post by IAMovement caught my eye. IAMovement i...

WHY A STYROPLASTICAL EARTH?

Image
Hey everyone. My name is Mohamed Eesaa Allie and I have produced this blog as an attempt to make clear what is happening to our oceans due to the increase in Styrofoam and Plastic pollution. Basically the title is the combination of these forms of waste. Based on my first post, the International Coastal Clean Up was an event that began around 30 years ago which emphasizes the point that we need to be more aware of the pollution that we produce. Before I begin, the foundation of this blog is accountable upon my Bachelor degree in Environmental Science and Sustainable Technology and in my Science Communication class, I have chosen this topic based on the International Year of the Reef (IYOR). This was an initiative that started in 1997, since there was an escalation of the ultimatum of the coral reefs. Also, in consideration are mangroves and sea grasses globally. ( https://www.icriforum.org/about-icri/iyor ). These natural habitats are in trouble and it is our choice to help them or n...
